The Swiss company SITA, which owns the .aero domain, has stopped servicing Russian clients on November 10, the Izvestia newspaper reported. The Russian Ministry of Transport stated that the aviation industry was ready to disconnect from this domain.
“News” citing three sources, they reported that Russian airlines using the .aero domain received a newsletter from the business domain registrar Ru-Center. It stated that SITA had stopped servicing Russian clients as of November 10. The Ru-Center company urgently extended the registration of Russian domains for another year, thereby preventing the termination of the sites.
The .aero domain was invented in 2002 specifically for representatives of the aviation industry. You can register a .aero domain only after obtaining a unique ownership identifier. It is used by more than 200 Russian sites, including 30 airports and 15 airlines. Among them are Pobeda, Azimut, Yamal, Ikar, Alrosa airlines, as well as Sheremetyevo, Zhukovsky, Kazan, Krasnoyarsk and Sochi airports.
The Ministry of Transport emphasized that disconnecting Russian airlines and airports from the domain will not lead to serious consequences. “Nothing bad will happen. We were all preparing for this, they announced their shutdown about a year ago,” Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Igor Chalik told TASS on the sidelines of the Transport of Russia forum.
At the same time, the Aerodinamika holding, which owns the airports of Sochi, Krasnodar and Anapa, reported that it had not received notifications about the suspension of domain registration. “Currently, the airports of the holding have not received notification of suspension of registration. Such a decision will not come as a surprise to our company. We manage risks, and therefore, in 2022, domains in the .ru zone were purchased for the websites of all managed airports,” the press service of Sochi Airport told RIA Novosti.
