The head of the government commission for crime prevention, Minister of Internal Affairs Vladimir Kolokoltsev, instructed the Ministry of Finance to create a state platform on which cryptocurrency confiscated in criminal cases will be stored. The Ministry of Finance must work on the proposal and report to the government commission on October 1, 2024, reports “News”.

“To study the issue of creating a digital currency platform localized on the territory of the Russian Federation and under state control for the purpose of their seizure and storage within the framework of criminal proceedings,” says the document, which is at the disposal of the publication.

The order was given following the results of a government commission, which was held at the end of December 2023. The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs told Izvestia that the Ministry of Finance was the initiator of the proposal.

The head of the State Duma Committee on the Financial Market, Anatoly Aksakov, supported the initiative, since, according to him, there are currently cases of illegal financial transactions with digital currency. “New technologies and tools are emerging that law enforcement agencies also need to use. If they confiscate cryptocurrency, then it must be stored somewhere,” he told the publication.

In February, the Bank of Russia recommended banks to reduce activities related to digital currencies. Among other things, the regulator warns against advertising services for their circulation, and also advises minimizing the participation of financial institutions in activities related to the circulation of digital currencies. The Central Bank explained that such operations pose a risk to the well-being of citizens.
