To ensure international agricultural operations, Russia is discussing with the UN the possibility of reconnecting Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT, which was disconnected from the financial messaging system on June 14. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin called the connection of Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT “a key issue”, without which the export of Russian agricultural products cannot be possible.
“Without that, of course, we simply cannot move forward. We discussed this issue before, yesterday we talked about it very substantively and for a long time, we again received assurances from the UN representatives that they also consider this issue to be vital,” Mr. Vershinin told reporters after a meeting with UN representatives in Geneva (quote from TASS).
In June, Rosselkhozbank, as well as Sberbank and MKB, were disconnected from the SWIFT system as part of the sixth package of EU sanctions. Removing barriers to Russian food exports, including financial ones, is key requirement the Russian side in the framework of the “grain deal”, one of the parties of which is the UN.
