Why is methanol needed at all?
Methyl alcohol is used as a solvent for cleaning gasoline, as a natural gas drying agent, as a high-octane fuel additive that increases engine power. Methanol is also used for protein synthesis, in the production of chemical fertilizers, acetic and formic acids, biodiesel fuel. Unlike ethyl alcohol, it is deadly even in small quantities and should not be used for the production of alcoholic beverages.
