Russia in September reduced supplies of coking coal abroad – Kommersant

In September, coking coal exports from Russia decreased by 8.2% compared to the same month last year, to 2.3 million tons. About this “Vedomosti” said two sources familiar with the Ministry of Energy data. Since the beginning of the year, supplies have fallen in annual terms by 5.1%, to 23.6 million tons.
According to the publication’s sources, the decrease in supplies of coking coal occurs against the backdrop of an increase in exports of thermal coal. For example, in September, thermal coal exports increased by 3.6%, to 13.6 million tons, and from the beginning of the year – by 3.8%, to 130.1 million tons. Taking into account the share of thermal coal in exports, the overall dynamics of coal exports positive: in September, supplies increased by 1.7%, to 15.9 million tons, since the beginning of the year – by 2.3% to 153.7 million tons.
The main volumes of coking coal are supplied to Asian countries. The main buyers of Russian coking coal are China and India. According to statistics, from the beginning of the year until September, these countries increased supplies of Russian raw materials.
In September 2023, Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov said that coal exports had increased by more than 3% since the beginning of the year. In November, Deputy Minister of Energy Sergei Mochalnikov said that exports since the beginning of the year were higher than 176 million tons, and production – 373 million tons. According to him, exports and coal production at the end of this year should be approximately at the level of last year.
According to Chinese customs statistics, supplies of metallurgical coal from Russia in September increased by 5.7%, to 2.6 million tons. Since the beginning of the year, they have increased by 33.7%, to 19.9 million tons. Export of coking coal to India from the beginning of the year increased by 2.3 times in annual terms, to 4.7 million tons. In September, supplies increased by 2.2 times, to 438,617 tons.
