Rosselkhoznadzor allowed five companies from Ecuador to supply bananas to Russia again. This right is returned under the guarantees of the supervisory services of Ecuador.

“Today we are officially announcing that on Monday at 4 o’clock Moscow time we will have a video conference with the control service of Ecuador. We are already saying today that we give these five Ecuadorian companies the right to supply Ecuadorian services under guarantees, and we will discuss the entire technical part further,” said the head of the department, Sergei Dankvert, on Rossiya 24.

In February, Rosselkhoznadzor, due to the humpback fly (cholera carrier) in Ecuadorian bananas, asked the Ecuadorian Minister of Agriculture and Livestock to suspend the certification of five fruit exporters. Russia’s decision affected 25 thousand jobs and more than 3 thousand small producers in Ecuador.

Rosselkhoznadzor first reported the humpback fly in Ecuadorian bananas in 2018. According to Ecuador’s Foreign Trade Minister Sonsoles García, Ecuador has since taken the necessary measures. She also noted that the life cycle of a fly is 24 days, while bananas travel for 40 days. Cholera, which is spread by flies, has not been detected in Ecuador since 2014, the minister said.

The Rosselkhoznadzor report about flies in Ecuadorian bananas appeared less than a month after Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced plans to give away military equipment made in Russia and Ukraine in exchange for new ones from the United States for $200 million. Russia warned Ecuador about the negative consequences of such a decision.
