Russia and Turkey formalize delivery of Russian nuclear fuel to Akkuyu NPP

Aleksey Likhachev, General Director of the Rosatom corporation, presented the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Domnez with a certificate for the delivery of nuclear fuel to the Akkuyu NPP. From that moment, the station officially became a nuclear facility, and Turkey joined the club of countries with nuclear energy. Ceremony via video link participated Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“The life cycle of the nuclear power plant that we are building in Turkey is at least 100 years, which means that the Akkuyu NPP has every chance to celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. I am sure that the station will contribute to a reliable, environmentally and cost-effective energy supply for several generations of Turkish citizens,” said Mr. Likhachev in a solemn speech (quote – press service Kremlin).
The head of the Turkish Ministry of Energy noted that Akkuyu for Turkey is the starting point in the development of nuclear energy in the country. He said that 500 Turkish students are now studying abroad to apply their knowledge in the field of nuclear energy in their homeland. “We will very quickly close the gap that we must close in order to carry out full-fledged, full-fledged production of nuclear energy,” Mr. Domnez said.
Rosatom has been building Akkuyu NPP on the Mediterranean coast in Turkey since 2018. It is assumed that after the station reaches its full capacity, it will cover 10% of Turkey’s total electricity demand.
