PJSC Rostelecom (MOEX: RTKM) completed the construction of the second stage of the New Trans-EurAsian Fiber Optic Communication Line (TEA NEXT) project. The new section connects St. Petersburg and Moscow. Its length is 765 km.

“The TEA NEXT project is designed to meet the rapidly growing needs of market participants for the infrastructure of fiber-optic communication lines for the development of the digital economy of Russia,” the words of Rostelecom President Mikhail Oseevsky are quoted in the press release. According to him, Russian-made components were used in the project.

TEA NEXT should connect the western and eastern borders of Russia with links to the largest cities of the country. The fiber-optic communication line will have outputs on the borders with Mongolia and China and a coastal station of underwater communication lines in Nakhodka.

The first phase was built at the end of 2022. It connected the cities of Idritsa in the Pskov region and Torzhok in the Tver region. Since December 2023, construction of the third stage has been underway between Torzhok and Kyakhta (Republic of Buryatia) on the border with Mongolia. The length of the section will be about 6.3 thousand km.

The total investment in TEM NEXT in 2021 was estimated at $650 million until 2025. It is expected that in 2026 the entire ground part of the line in Russia will be completed. According to the company’s statement, more than 1.3 thousand km of route are currently ready in the European part of the country. The project is also announced as an alternative to maritime cable systems from China through the Indian Ocean and Egypt.

Previously, Rostelecom received 100% of Mango Telecom LLC and M.Developer LLC as collateral, companies providing IP telephony services and software development for corporate communications. Analysts estimate Mango Telecom at 5–6 billion rubles. and note that if it passes to Rostelecom, there will be no large independent companies left in the IP telephony market.
