The Federal Agency for Fishery plans to discuss with scientists the state of sturgeon stocks and the possibility of lifting the moratorium on sterlet fishing in the Azov-Black Sea basin for amateur fishermen. About it in an interview RBC informed head of the Federal Agency for Fishery Ilya Shestakov.
At the same time, the issue of catching sterlet in the Caspian Sea has not yet been discussed. Shestakov recalled that the Caspian countries decided to extend the ban on sturgeon fishing in this region until 2023. “There are no plans to cancel it yet. From what can be discussed, this is the discovery of a sterlet catch in the Azov-Black Sea basin, at least for amateur fishermen,” he said.
According to Shestakov, the Federal Agency for Fisheries will hold a meeting of the science council in March and discuss with scientists the latest study of the state of sturgeon stocks. After that, he noted, it will become clear where the stock has recovered and where there is an opportunity to allow production.
The moratorium on industrial fishing for beluga has been in effect in Russia since 2000, and for stellate sturgeon and sturgeon since 2005. Later, other countries of the Caspian region also supported this ban. In 2022, Russia, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan agreed to extend the moratorium until 2023.
