On the night of July 4-5, Roskomnadzor conducted exercises to ensure the stability of the Runet. Source RBC in the telecommunications market said that during the exercise “the international Internet was turned off.”
The representative of the department left the question of what tasks the organizers were pursuing by turning off the international segment of the Internet unanswered. He only noted that the exercises were successful, and recalled that, according to the law, they must be held at least once a year.
Representatives of Rostelecom, MTS, MegaFon and Vimpelcom (Beeline brand) declined to comment.
The law on “sovereign runet” was adopted in the fall of 2019. By law, telecom operators must install special equipment through which Roskomnadzor can control traffic routing if necessary.
