Signboards began to change at Costa Coffee coffee shops in Moscow. Now they are simply called Coffee, Vedomosti noticed. The designations of points on Yandex and Google maps have also changed. But on the official website of the network, the old brand is still indicated.
Until recently, 14 coffee houses in Moscow and Kazan operated under the banner of Costa Coffee in Russia. The brand itself is one of the ten largest international chains of coffee houses with 3,400 outlets in various countries and annual revenues of $1.17 billion.
Trademarks in Russian catering are changing so that there is no association with international brands, says Anna Savenko, a real estate consultant and founder of the SavaFM telegram channel. This, in turn, is explained by the fact that many of them left Russia. For example, the McDonald’s chain, after the sale of the local business, is now called Vkusno i Tochka), KFC – Rostik, Dunkin Donuts – Donutto, Starbucks – Stars Coffee. In the case of Coffee, according to Mikhail Burmistrov, General Director of Infoline-Analytics, the owners of the company will still be able to minimize rebranding costs.
Large international chains continue to gradually curtail business in Russia, Burmistrov notes. According to him, Burger King has the most stable situation, since the owner of a global brand simply does not have the opportunity to close franchise outlets. Of the major players in the local market, Subway still remains, but the owners of the latter have launched the process of selling the entire business, recalls Burmistrov.
The first coffee shop under the Costa Coffee brand in Russia opened in March 2008 on Pushkinskaya Square in Moscow. The coffee houses are managed by the restaurant holding “Rosinter Restaurants”, which has exclusive rights to open coffee houses under this brand in our country. The brand itself is owned by Coca-Cola HBC, which bought it from the British company Whitbread in 2018 for 3.9 billion pounds. Multon Partners (Coca-Cola in Russia) and Rosinter Restaurants did not respond to Vedomosti’s inquiries.
