The risk of flooding in the Zaporizhzhia region with a possible breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovka reservoir has significantly decreased, said adviser to the general director of Rosenergoatom (a structure of Rosatom) Renat Karchaa. According to him, technical solutions have been found to reduce risks.
“One of the sandors of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station was opened, the repair of the Kakhovka main canal has begun: the restoration of pumps and surviving pipes is underway. The water began to drain. The risk of flooding has been greatly reduced,” said Mr. Karchaa TASS. In his opinion, the threat will be eliminated when the water level reaches the norm.
The authorities of the Zaporozhye region earlier reported about an increase in the water level in the reservoir by 17 m, the norm was exceeded by 2.5 meters. Tens of thousands of people could have ended up in the flood zone if the dam was blown up, said Vladimir Rogov, chairman of the We Are Together with Russia movement. Renat Karchaa assumedthat the water level reached a high level not for natural reasons, that it was accumulated artificially. He feared that the dam break would flood not only the Zaporizhzhya NPP, but also several settlements.
