The Federal Air Transport Agency commented on the information appearing in the media about the planning of flights through the airspace of Syria. The Syrian side has not yet provided a response on the implementation of the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization in terms of ensuring security measures, the agency noted. Today, December 27, the head of the civil aviation service of Syria informedthat the country has opened airspace for civil aircraft from Russia.
“Currently, the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic continues to be tense due to the ongoing armed conflict. In this regard, the issue of carrying out flights of civil aircraft of Russian airlines in the airspace of Syria requires a comprehensive assessment,” the agency said in its Telegram channel.
Previously, several airlines flying to Egypt asked Rosaviation to lift the ban on flights through Syria, introduced almost ten years ago. The airspace of this country was needed by carriers with aircraft in double registration, when, following Turkey and Saudi Arabia, Jordan refused to let their ships in. NordWind, Icarus and iFly faced difficulties. The ban on flights through Syria was introduced in April 2013.
