Rosatom received permission to build new NPP units in Hungary

The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority issued a permit to the Russian corporation Rosatom to build two power units at the Paks NPP. It is due to start in October 2022 and the building permit is valid for 10 years.
The Paks NPP was built according to the Soviet design, it has four VVER-440 power units with a total capacity of about 2 GW. The station generates almost half of all electricity in Hungary. The contract for the construction of the fifth and sixth power units with Rosatom was signed in 2014. The construction period was delayed due to the proceedings of the European Commission. The cost of construction is estimated at €12.5 billion. At the same time, 80% of the financing was supposed to be carried out at the expense of a Russian loan.
In accordance with EU sanctions, the construction of the station had to be suspended, since the project was financed by a Russian loan to the Hungarian government. However, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto, said that sanctions against Russia would not affect the project, since the country’s energy security depends on it. The Hungarian authorities plan to build the station in an accelerated mode due to the energy crisis.
