The Romanian Ministry of Culture got lost between space and politics
In Romania, the screening of Russian films “Challenge” and “Time of the First” was unexpectedly cancelled. The National Film Archive of Romania terminated its contract with the Russian Embassy, citing counteraction to propaganda as the reason for its decision. Romanian Culture Minister Raluca Turcan announced this on social networks.
On April 19, the Eforie cinema was supposed to show the world’s first film shot on the ISS, “The Challenge.” And 8 days later – a film about the first human spacewalk in history, “Time of the First,” but this time in the Union cinema. However, the State Film Fund of Romania considered that the films were of a propaganda nature, which is why it decided to terminate the contract with the Russian Embassy to rent cinema halls for showing films (which was scheduled in Bucharest on the occasion of Cosmonautics Day).
“It is unacceptable that such obviously propaganda cinematic products, financed by the Russian state, are shown in public cinemas,” the head of the Romanian Ministry of Culture said on social networks.
Meanwhile, earlier the director of the National Film Archive, Roxanne Gareth, said in an interview with Free Europe that their thoughts have nothing to do with politics: “Our role is to provide equality of opportunity in terms of equal access to culture, without discriminating against anyone depending on their current or future political context.”
The Russian embassy has already responded to the blatant injustice, writing that the screening of films will take place no matter what: “We will inform you about the new location later. We invite you to watch it to see that the politicized accusations are groundless.”
