RKN: 230 million records with personal data of Russians leaked to the network since the beginning of 2022

Since the beginning of this year, about 60 major personal data leaks have occurred in Russia. This was reported in Roskomnadzor. Thus, during this time, 230 million records with personal information of Russians got into the public domain.
“Since the beginning of 2022, there have already been at least 60 major personal data leaks containing more than 230 million records with personal information of citizens. Not only such personal data as surname, address and telephone number have been compromised, but also medical data, data on behavioral characteristics, consumer preferences of people,” the RKN said (quoted by TASS).
The department noted that thanks to massive leaks, “digital portraits” are being created. Subsequently, they are used for fraud, bullying, defamation and other offenses.
The RKN pointed out the need to criminalize the activities of those involved in information leaks. “The actions of those people who use the stolen data without confirmation of their legal origin and the right to use are illegal. Appropriate responsibility for such acts is necessary, ”Roskomnadzor said.
Number of leaks has grown in Russia to record levels. According to Group-IB, more than 304 million lines of data hit the Internet this summer alone. To the Ministry of Digital Development promisedthat a bill on turnover fines for businesses for leaking personal data will be presented in mid-September.
