Russia has no plans to repair damaged Nord Stream gas pipelines yet Reuters with reference to sources. According to them, most likely the gas pipelines will be temporarily mothballed.
“Moscow has no plans to restore Nord Stream, they are buried,” said a source familiar with Russia’s gas plans. “Projects will be mothballed,” another source added. A third source confirmed the possibility of gas pipelines being mothballed, while adding that the gas pipeline’s capacity could potentially be reused.
Nord Stream 1 with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters m per year has been idle since the end of August 2022, after it was closed for maintenance. It was never launched due to a dispute between Moscow and the West over equipment for a surface pumping station. Nord Stream 2, of the same capacity, was never put into operation after construction was completed, since the German authorities refused to certify the project shortly before the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Both pipelines were badly damaged after explosions in September. Only one string of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline survived.
In February 2023, American journalist Seymour Hersh published an article titled “How America Destroyed the Nord Stream Gas Pipeline”, in which, citing one source, he accused the United States of organizing explosions on gas pipelines. The White House called this material a lie, the European Commission – speculation. Russia regarded the explosions as “an act of international terrorism”, President Vladimir Putin blamed the “Anglo-Saxons” for this.
