Russia more than doubled rail exports of liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) or liquefied petroleum gas to China in 2022 as part of the diversification of energy export sales. This is reported Reuters with reference to analysis based on data from industry sources.
According to traders, the increase was mainly due to an increase in supplies from the Irkutsk Oil Company (INC) after the launch of the Ust-Kutsk gas processing plant in Eastern Siberia. Data obtained by Reuters showed that exports to China rose to 147,100 tons from 62,600 tons a year earlier.
Other major LPG exporters such as Gazprom, Rosneft, Lukoil, Tatneft and Sibur redirected their supplies from Ukraine and Europe last year. Reuters notes that the increase in exports of liquefied hydrocarbon gases also came as trade with China fell in 2021 amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Traders say LPG exports from Russia to China are currently limited, in part due to limited rail capacity.
Liquefied petroleum gas is mainly used as a fuel for cars, heating and for the production of other petrochemical products. Almost all Russian LPG exports to China go by rail.
