Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that restrictions on the export of motor gasoline and diesel fuel introduced by the government yesterday are aimed at stabilizing the market. This measure is not related to fears of a social explosion and will last as long as necessary.
“The fuel market is unstable everywhere now, there were certain problems, it was necessary to regulate the market against the backdrop of harvesting work, etc., the government took timely measures. They will act as long as necessary,” Mr. Peskov commented on the government’s decision during a press call.
Journalists asked him whether the government’s decision was related to fears of unrest in society due to rising gasoline prices.
“What does this have to do with social explosions? There are no social explosions, nothing. These are all very exaggerated formulations. This is the government’s normal job to ensure the stability of the fuel market,” the spokesman replied.
From September 21, the government temporarily banned the export of commercial gasoline and diesel fuel. The export of commercial fuel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and also within the framework of intergovernmental agreements remained permitted. The resolution did not specify a time frame for lifting the ban, but market participants believed that the embargo was unlikely to last more than a month. Otherwise, refineries will be forced to reduce processing due to overstocking with diesel fuel.
