Resigned as minister, devoted himself to the theater: the roles and life of Yuri Solomin

On the frosty night of January 11, Yuri Solomin passed away. One of the last people’s artists of the USSR. Artistic director of the Maly Theater, who held this post for thirty-five years! Teacher of many actors, thanks to him, Professor Solomin, who became famous. Finally, Pavel Andreevich Koltsov, His Honor Mr. Adjutant to His Excellency – from the Soviet series of the same name. He died as a happy man – because he was at home, having returned from the hospital, where he had stayed for more than two months. And my native walls help. He hoped so. He was 88.

I had a difficult start in art; life seemed to deliberately test my strength, preparing me for a big voyage. Born in Chita in 1935. After graduating from school, I went with my father to Moscow to enter drama school. They traveled by train for eight days, and in the capital the money was stolen from the provincials; there was nothing to live on. We decided to return home, although the exams were still ongoing and nothing had been decided with the boy from Chita. The father advised his son to go to the student who was taking a course at the Theater School. Shchepkin to Vera Pashennaya and tell him honestly about everything in order to understand whether he has any hope of admission or not. If not, then we need to return to Chita. But Pashennaya firmly told Yuri to stay in Moscow, and he stayed. Later, it was she who would help the young artist get his first film role. In 1960, the film “Sleepless Night” by Isidor Annensky will be released, where Solomin will play a young engineer.

In 1957, immediately after graduating from theater school, Yuri Solomin was accepted into the troupe of the Maly Theater, where eminent artists worked at that time – Tsarev, Ilyinsky, Annenkov, Pashennaya… At first he was content with tiny and nameless roles of some officers, newspapermen, correspondents, until Igor Ilyinsky did not invite him to “The Inspector General” for the role of Khlestakov. The legendary actor felt his range, his ability to play both a character role and a hero.

Over the years of work at Maly, Yuri Solomin played many roles that seemed beyond the control of one artist – Tsar Fyodor in the tragedy of Alexei Tolstoy, Ivan Petrovich in The Humiliated and Insulted, Cyrano in Cyrano de Bergerac, Fedya Protasov in The Living Corpse. , Voinitsky in “Uncle Vanya”, Trigorin in “The Seagull”, Famusov in “Woe from Wit”… As artistic director, he was also involved in the renovation of the historical theater building, the foundation of which was “walking” and threatened with destruction. Together with the director, he delved into every little detail, leaving nothing unattended – after all, this is his House. It took a lot of strength, and the age was already serious. He survived – Ostrovsky’s house stands strong, and this is due in no small part to his merit, his sleepless nights.

Recognition and popular love came to Solomin when he was over thirty. Fame fell upon him after the release of the multi-part television film “His Excellency’s Adjutant” by Yevgeny Tashkov, where he played the hero of the Civil War, intelligence officer Pavel Koltsov. But the artistic council did not want to approve the artist for this role. Only the persistence of director Tashkov did its job. He fought for Solomin to the last. In total, the artist played more than 80 roles in films. Among them is Vladimir Arsenyev in the Oscar-winning film “Dersu-Uzala” by the Japanese classic Akira Kurosawa. They say that Kurosawa chose an actor based on a photograph, and only then watched the films with his participation. Russian consultants (and the film was a Soviet-Japanese production) decided to show him one of the episodes of “His Excellency’s Adjutant.” Kurosawa ended up watching the entire film.

And later Solomin was lucky with Japan. He played in another Soviet hit – “Melodies of the White Night” by Sergei Solovyov and Kiyoshi Nishimura – composer Ilya, who met and fell in love with a Japanese pianist – she was played by the beautiful Kamaki Kurihara. In the 90s, the Russian-Japanese “Dreams about Russia” by Juya Sato were released with the participation of Japanese actors, as well as Marina Vladi and Oleg Yankovsky. There Yuri Solomin played the count.

And although the roles were different, in the cinema the role of a good and honest Soviet man was assigned to him. In another hit of that time – the political detective story “TASS is authorized to declare” by Vladimir Fokin – he played Colonel Slavin. And his composer Ilya in “Melody of the White Night” was also a model of decency. Solomin played Telegin in Vasily Ordynsky’s “Walking Through Torment,” worked with Rustam Khamdamov in “Anna Karamazoff,” and masterfully played an innkeeper in Mark Zakharov’s “An Ordinary Miracle.”

He himself tried his hand at directing, filming “The Scandalous Incident at Brickmill” and “The Shore of His Life.” One of his last film roles was Yusupov in Dmitry Barshchevsky’s “Boulevard Ring,” for whom he also starred in “Heavy Sand” and “Moscow Saga,” happened ten years ago. Surprisingly, for some reason many directors did not dare to invite him to their films. And he would agree to a small role if it was worthwhile. This often happens when directors find themselves caught up in misconceptions.

But Sergei Ursulyak turned out to be not a timid guy – he invited Yuri Methodievich to play the small role of Isaev’s father in the TV series “Isaev”. There were only a few days of filming planned. It seems to be out of rank with the people of the USSR. But there were no problems with him. Solomin happily got to work, and as often happens with great artists, he did not think, according to Ursulyak, about himself, but only about the common cause. This is a distinctive feature of old-school actors.

There was one fact in his biography that deserves attention and respect. During the hot times of perestroika, Yuri Solomin became the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, he wanted to serve his country. A variety of people turned to him for help, and he helped. I tried to help everyone. However, after a year and a half of working in a ministerial post, he wrote a letter of resignation, explaining his action as follows: “You cannot work when you are not heard.” Who in our time voluntarily left such high positions?

In recent years, Yuri Solomin has not communicated with journalists or attended noisy gatherings. He could only be met in the theater, to which he devoted all his time and energy.

Farewell to Yuri Solomin will take place on January 15 at the Maly Theater, and he will be buried at Troekurovskoye Cemetery next to his wife Olga, who left this world in 2019. This was his last wish.
