Republicans and Democrats in the US Senate proposed a ban on Russian uranium imports

A group of US senators from the Republican and Democratic parties introduced a bill to impose an embargo on Russian uranium. The US Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources believes that the country may refuse to use it.

Republican Senator John Barrasso said Wyoming has the resources to boost U.S. manufacturing. Democrat Joe Manchin believes that the bill will help the United States abandon “dependence on uranium fuel imported from Russia.” Republican Jim Rish noted that the US does not yet have the capacity to fully produce enriched uranium. In his opinion, this situation has led to “unsafe dependence on Russia.”

The bill was also co-sponsored by Democrats Martin Heinrich and Chris Koons and Republicans Cynthia Lummis and Roger Marshall. The information is published on the website of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (the resource is not available on the territory of the Russian Federation).

Western countries began to actively discuss the abandonment of Russian uranium in 2023.
