Putin proposed to confiscate objects of cultural heritage left by foreigners

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that if foreign owners of cultural heritage sites are not able to maintain them in proper condition, they should be removed. He announced this at a meeting with the Governor of the Novgorod region Andrei Nikitin.

Mr. Nikitin said that there are many cultural heritage sites in Veliky Novgorod that belong to foreign owners. “Half the city belongs to citizens of other states. They don’t do anything about it,” the governor said (quoted by TASS).

“We need to set certain deadlines for putting things in order. If not, it’s easy to confiscate, and that’s all,” Mr. Putin answered him. He noted that if the legal framework is not enough for this, it needs to be supplemented.
