Russian President Vladimir Putin took part via video link in the opening of Russia’s largest plant for the production of components for solar energy in the Kaliningrad region, reports “RIA News”.

The agency, citing the Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, reported that the enterprise will allow the cultivation of ingots and the production of wafers of monocrystalline silicon for solar cells with a total capacity of up to 1.3 GW per year. These components are used in solar modules, ARVE added.

The association said the plant was designed and built from scratch in a record two years. Investments in the project amount to about 30 billion rubles. It was implemented with the support of the Industrial Development Fund. The company has created 700 jobs, RIA Novosti reports.

According to ARVE co-chairman Viktor Vekselberg, the plant in the Kaliningrad region will become the largest manufacturer of components for solar energy in the Eurasian Economic Union, the agency reports.

The enterprise belongs to the Enkor company. The plant will be located in the Chernyakhovsk industrial park, reported “Interfax” company. Vladimir Putin, during the opening ceremony of the enterprise, said that in the first quarter of this year a plant for the creation of solar cells will be launched in the Kaliningrad region, the agency reports.

In 2023, Russia restored the import of pure silicon, which had sagged after the outbreak of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine. Deliveries increased 14 times, exceeding 330 tons. Basically, the place of the usual Western manufacturers was taken by Asian ones. The main consumer of raw materials is solar energy.
