Putin authorized the transfer of nuclear fuel to the Bangladeshi nuclear power plant “Rooppur”

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took part in the ceremony to begin the delivery of nuclear fuel to the Bangladeshi Rooppur nuclear power plant via video link. The Russian President gave permission for the transfer of fuel, the first batch has already been sent.
“Now, as part of our ceremony, a certificate of delivery of Russian nuclear fuel to power unit 1 of the Rooppur NPP will be handed over to our Bangladeshi colleagues. After this, Rooppur will receive the official status of a nuclear facility,” said Mr. Putin (his words are quoted on website Kremlin).
The ceremony was also attended by Rosatom Director Alexey Likhachev. He said that for construction the parties managed to overcome “the difficulties and challenges associated with the pandemic and unprecedented foreign policy pressure.”
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi welcomed the start of a civilian nuclear program in Bangladesh. “I note the fact that Bangladesh has decided to take advantage of nuclear power to continue its path to development, which has impressed all members of the global international community,” Mr. Grossi said (quoted by RIA Novosti).
In Dhaka, First Deputy Director General for Nuclear Energy of Rosatom and President of Atomstroyexport Andrei Petrov presented the Prime Minister of Bangladesh with a certificate of delivery of nuclear fuel from Russia. Vice-President – Director for Construction of the Rooppur NPP of Atomstroyexport JSC Alexey Derii told reporters that Russia will make six more deliveries of nuclear fuel for the first reactor of the nuclear power plant by the end of November, TASS reports.
The Rooppur nuclear power plant is being built on the eastern bank of the Padma River, 160 km from the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka. Construction work began in 2021. The station will consist of two power units.
