Producers in Germany announced unprofitable work due to cheap fertilizers of the Russian Federation

German farmers continue to use Russian fertilizers, which are not subject to EU sanctions. According to Bild, this is due to the fact that the growth in the cost of fertilizers produced in Germany is up to 150%.
The refusal of German producers from cheap Russian gas leads to the fact that “gas-intensive production of nitrogen and ammonia fertilizers is gradually becoming unprofitable”, as gas prices rose by 40%. Against this backdrop, imports of Russian fertilizers to the EU increased five-fold in 2022.
In February, the German chemical group BASF announced the closure of its ammonia plant in Ludwigshafen. According to Bild, SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz GmbH may close production in the near future, which also reported difficulties in connection with the import of cheap fertilizers from Russia to Germany.
