Russians’ income from entrepreneurship has reached a ten-year record. In 2023, they grew to 6 trillion rubles, Rosstat calculated. And this is almost 25% in real terms, noted the Higher School of Economics. The share of this item in the total cash income of the population is close to 7%, and this is the maximum figure since 2014.

In income from entrepreneurship, Rosstat includes rental income, royalties, corporate bonuses, income of individual entrepreneurs and self-employed people. What made such indicators possible? Associate Professor at the Financial University Oleg Komolov believes that it’s all about macroeconomic trends: “According to Rosstat data, real disposable income in 2023 increased in the Russian economy as a whole, not only business income.

Ultimately, this is explained fundamentally by a number of factors, the main one being the shortage of labor in general: the market lacks 2.5 million people. This increases all types of labor income, including the income of the self-employed, which are included in the entrepreneurial category.

One can also note the gradual whitening of the rental market: apartments are increasingly being rented out legally. And it’s also worth saying that the statistics for 2023 compare the values with 2022, and it was a failure in many respects. Therefore, there is an effect of restorative growth, which also gives amazing figures for a sharp increase in indicators in all areas.

As for comparison with 2014, Rosstat is constantly coming up with new approaches in terms of methodology. And in general, it should be noted that since that time, the population’s income has been falling in real terms, especially entrepreneurial income. At the same time, for the first time in many years, our budget is in deficit, and this thus stimulates economic growth, not even so much as production, which further increases the labor force, and, accordingly, these additional funds are redistributed in favor of the working people.”

Positive dynamics of business income is a good signal. But there is still no confidence that this trend will continue, noted Sofya Donets, an economist at Renaissance Capital Investment Company: “The SME sector, service and service sector, obviously felt better in 2023 than many. Of course, one cannot help but talk about positive dynamics, because the real disposable income of Russians over the last decade has not been stable.

During this time, we barely maintained the level of real disposable income, but against the general background, of course, the strong dynamics of 2023 stood out. We saw growth, but it was still shifted to the base, to salaries.

I want to believe that this will last for a long time. But, given the experience of the past 10 years, it is somehow scary to be optimistic and draw the conclusion that we will now see real disposable income grow by 5% every year, as in 2023. It’s too early to judge this.”

At the same time, property income last year decreased by 41% in real terms, to a level below 4 trillion rubles. Economists do not rule out that Rosstat will carry out an additional assessment, and the figure should be higher, at least due to high deposit rates.
