Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin tested negative after a drug test she took for “dispel suspicion”, announced her entourage, Monday August 22, less than a week after the broadcast on social networks of a private video showing her partying. These pictures have aroused a wave of criticism in part of the Finnish political class, part of the opinion supporting on the contrary the right to privacy of the 36-year-old head of government.
“Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s drug test dated August 19, 2022 did not reveal the presence of drugs”said the cabinet of Mme Marin in a statement, adding that the results had been signed off by a doctor.
M’s urineme Marin was tested for the presence of different drugs such as cocaine, amphetamine, cannabis and opioids, Iida Vallin, a special adviser to the prime minister, told Agence France-Presse. “The test was a comprehensive test. We did not choose how the test was carried out”added Iida Vallin.
“Never in my life have I taken drugs”
A leaked video last week showing Sanna Marin dancing and partying with a group of friends and celebrities has sparked controversy in Finland’s political scene. Some had interpreted the comments heard in the video as referring to narcotics, an interpretation which had provoked heated debates on social networks, but firmly rejected by the Prime Minister.
“To dispel any suspicion, I took a drug test today”, Sanna Marin told reporters on Friday. The Prime Minister had already said that she had “spent an evening with friends” and that the videos had “was filmed in private places”.
She had admitted to drinking alcohol. In addition to having denied having taken drugs, she added that she had not witnessed any drug taking by those present. “Never in my life, and not even in my youth, did I take drugs”she said.
Several controversies since 2019
Since her accession to this post in 2019, the one who was once the youngest head of government in the world has already suffered several waves of criticism related to her hobbies, her age or her gender. In 2020, hundreds of Finnish women had supported her by posing in cleavage on social networks, behind the hashtag imwithsanna – “I am with Sanna”. Sanna Marin was then accused of “playing the models” in the midst of a health crisis for having posed for a magazine with a black blazer, with nothing underneath.
In December 2021, Sanna Marin had to apologize for dancing until dawn without her phone, unaware that she was in contact with Covid-19. She also had to justify herself on breakfast costs.
The joint government of Mme Marin is not spared from attacks, particularly of a sexist nature. In 2021, a report published by the NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence (Stratcom) in Latvia, based on a study conducted in 2020, pointed to the scale of the attacks and the “coordinated harassment” specifically targeting Finnish ministers on Twitter.
