Prime Minister of Latvia called US sanctions a signal to verify the citizenship of Aven

The introduction of US sanctions against one of the founders of Alfa Group, Petr Aven, is a signal for the Latvian authorities to check the validity of his citizenship. This was stated by Prime Minister of Latvia Krisjanis Karins.
“The decision of the OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Department of the Treasury) on sanctions against P. Aven is another important signal for the responsible Latvian institutions in assessing the legitimacy of citizenship,” wrote Mr. Karins on Twitter.
Mr. Aven got sanctioned yesterday, August 11th. The US restrictions also affected other founders of the Alfa Group – Mikhail Fridman, Alexei Kuzmichev and German Khan. All assets of businessmen under US jurisdiction will be frozen, and US citizens will be prohibited from entering into any transactions with them. Messrs. Fridman and Aven came under blocking sanctions from the European Union and Great Britain a year and a half ago.
