The head of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia, Maxim Shaskolsky, said that oil companies and independent gas stations should reduce fuel prices at gas stations to an economically feasible level.

Earlier today, October 5, FAS sent letters to vertically integrated companies and independent gas stations about the need to reduce the cost of fuel sales, taking into account exchange prices for petroleum products. Journalists asked Mr. Shaskolsky whether the FAS had set a target to which fuel prices at gas stations should be reduced. “This must be an economically justified level,” he replied (quoted by TASS).

The head of the FAS emphasized that oil companies are obliged to provide fuel to consumers on the domestic market, including agricultural producers. “Now measures have been taken that have led to a reduction in prices in all segments of the motor fuel market. This allows you to purchase for future use at good prices,” noted Mr. Shaskolsky.

At the same time, Maxim Shaskolsky drew attention to the fact that the government should not go too far with restrictive measures on the fuel market; all of them must be verified and justified. “Companies are not in an easy position. It is necessary to take into account the situation and the need for investment, development, maintaining production, maintaining the plants themselves at full capacity. We cannot allow any measures to cause a decrease in oil refining volumes,” he added.

On the initiation of the first antimonopoly cases based on the results of the FAS inspection of the petroleum products market reported September 29. Violations were detected in the Belgorod and Rostov regions, Krasnodar and Stavropol territories, as well as in Dagestan.

In September, after a long period of rising prices for petroleum products, the government banned export of motor gasoline and diesel fuel. Yesterday, October 4, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that the ban had stabilized the situation on the fuel market. Kommersant’s industry interlocutors believe that a partial lifting of the export ban will be announced in the coming days.
