So, the chief director of the Moscow Art Theater. Gorky was Galina Polishchuk. The figure, frankly, is still widely known in narrow circles, and this all the more excites interest in it. Who is she, what is her creative background?
Galina Polishchuk was born, grew up and studied in Riga, she has no relatives in Russia. The track record is more than curious – a stewardess, a philologist, a teacher in the senior classes of a comprehensive school, a public figure and a director. She received her last profession in Moscow, at GITIS, where she came to enter at the age of 27.
– And since it turned out that the acting department accepts up to 25 years, I went to the directing department. She studied with Boris Yukhananov and Klim.
These masters in the 90s developed a modern direction in the Russian theater, and a radical one at that. By the way, Klim highly appreciated Polishchuk’s acting abilities, she played with him, but still preferred the profession of a director. In Russia, she staged only in a distant province, and here in Moscow, at the Moscow Art Theater on Tverskoy Boulevard, two years ago she released the play “Yesenin’s Women”, which is now breaking attendance records. Her second work also at the Moscow Art Theater was the production of “Wait for me” based on the story of Valentin Rasputin. Now she opens a new page in her biography at the Art Theater, becoming its chief director. This means that to some extent it should determine the artistic policy of the Academic Theatre.
– Galina, do you already have a program for the artistic development of the theater?
Yes, I will announce it later. We have already discussed a lot with Vladimir Abramovich (Vladimir Kekhman – General Director of the Gorky Moscow Art Theater – M.R.). But today I see my main task in one thing – to occupy as many artists as possible in the current repertoire. The troupe is big, the actors are of different generations, and everyone has to work.
Apparently, the general director of the Moscow Art Theater gives full carte blanche to Galina Polishchuk. Next season, according to him, she should make a collection of her performances. “The collection, because it has its own style, and I also want it to help me organize the work of the director’s department at the European level,” Vladimir Kekhman explained.
It remains to be said that Galina Polishchuk will begin her duties as chief director on March 13.
