Poland seeks EU sanctions on the Druzhba oil pipeline in order not to pay a penalty to the Russian Federation

Poland insists on the introduction of pan-European sanctions against oil supplies via the Druzhba, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said following the talks of EU foreign ministers. Warsaw fears that Russia will demand to pay a penalty in the event of a unilateral refusal to supply.
Mr. Rau recalled that Poland has pledged to use Russian oil by the end of the year. According to him, this requires sanctions from the EU. “Otherwise, if Poland itself, by virtue of its own decision, refuses to use oil from this pipeline, then we will simply have to pay compensation to the Russian side, and that’s not what we are talking about,” the minister told reporters (quoted by RIA Novosti).
An embargo on Russian oil will be established in the European Union from December 5. Formally, the sanctions do not apply to deliveries through Druzhba – Hungary has achieved this exception. However, Poland and Germany have assumed increased obligations and do not intend to receive energy through this pipeline.
