Poland demanded that Russia return seven pieces of art from the Pushkin Museum

Poland filed applications with Russia for the restitution of seven cultural objects that the USSR took out during World War II. The paintings are in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. “The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, acting in accordance with its authority, has developed seven more applications for restitution in respect of works of art exported from Poland to the USSR as a result of World War II,” said Culture Minister Piotr Gliński.
“Cases of theft of cultural property have no statute of limitations, not only in ethical and moral terms, but also in the field of international law. The Polish state will never stop searching for and returning cultural property looted as a result of World War II,” he added.
Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Piotr Wawrzyk said that on September 12, a note on restitution was sent to Russia. Among the paintings are: “Adoration of the Child” by Lorenzo di Credi, “Two Sorrowful Saints” by Aretino Spinello, “Madonna and Child with John the Baptist”, “Madonna and Child with the Little John the Baptist in a Landscape”.
“At the moment, the Russian Ministry of Culture has not received an official claim from Poland for the displaced cultural property in the manner prescribed by this law,” the Russian ministry said.
In 2004, 2012 and 2014, the country sent 20 restitution applications to Russia, according to which the Russian Federation must return several thousand works of art, according to the Polish Minister of Culture. Russia did not consider them. Over the past six years, Poland has returned more than 600 cultural objects from other countries.
