Poet Fazil Iskander’s office opens in Moscow

An oak table was put up in the Cultural Center named after the writer, at which he wrote the main works
The opening of the Memorial Office of the writer and poet Fazil Iskander took place in Moscow. The atmosphere of his office was recreated in the Cultural Center, located in the library on Pravda Street. Since 2017, the Iskander Center has been named after the poet, collecting his books and personal belongings, holding lectures and round tables to popularize the work of the author of Sandro from Chegem. Now a memorial room has been opened there, the main exhibit of which is the writer’s oak table.
Few photographs have survived that captured Fazil Iskander at the same desk. The writer’s workplace has always been filled with personal and important things for him: there are framed family photos, notebooks, and a green lamp on a clamp. It was at this oak table that the writer created his best works – “Sandro from Chegem”, “Rabbits and Boas” and many others.
The widow of the writer Antonina Iskander-Khlebnikova handed over the Iskander Center and personal belongings that complemented the decor of the memorial office: a typewriter, an inkwell, chess, gifts from friends and admirers. And also the personal library of the poet, which was kept on the bookshelves just opposite the desk: it contains books with autographs by Akhmadulina, Bitov, Yevtushenko, Okudzhava, Gorodnitsky. Many things in the memorial office are connected with the story “The Constellation of Kozlotur”, which brought the writer wide fame in the 1960s. Anyone can visit the memorial office every Wednesday – admission is free.
