Poet and composer Mikhail Gutseriev celebrates his 65th birthday

A musical school in childhood, a passion for literature and poetry at an already conscious age at first could hardly compete with what is commonly called a serious education and a real job. But, as it is customary to say in such situations, creativity did not let go, and, already being a successful entrepreneur and a very influential person, Mikhail Gutseriev decided to give himself a chance as a songwriter.
Mikhail Safarbekovich calls Alexander Buinov his godfather in the music industry, who, after meeting a poet completely unknown in musical circles, offered to write music for several poems. In 2012, three hits to Gutseriev’s poems at once got into the “Song of the Year”: “Two Lives” performed by Alexander Buinov, “Joker” by Stas Mikhailov and “Territory of Love” by Rada Rai.
Such a selection of co-authors and performers for the songs looked more than logical. Passion for classical poetry, education and life experience were a very suitable background for the lyrics of a high variety flight, and the cream of the music establishment could provide a new poet for the general public with a really ideal audience in terms of age and musical tastes.
Movement along the stage track quickly acquired a stable and successful character. Mikhail Safarbekovich’s co-authors included Igor Krutoy, Kim Breitburg, Andrei Misin, Viktor Drobysh and other composers from the category of legends, and the songs were performed by artists who did not need a special introduction. Iosif Kobzon himself recorded three songs at once to the verses of Gutseriev. And there were also Sofia Rotaru, Philip Kirkorov, Nadezhda Kadysheva, Tamara Gverdtsiteli, Alexander Malinin, Taisiya Povaliy, Valeria, Kristina Orbakaite, Nikolai Rastorguev, in general, stars of federal coverage.
It must be admitted that all the participants in this variety process perfectly suited each other. Adult songs for adults and obviously with an eye on a long life in the stellar repertoires.
However, the reputation of an adherent of the classics of the genre did not prevent Mikhail Gutseriev from showing curiosity about the territory inhabited by artists who prefer more modernist and adventurous musical scenarios. Few could have imagined that the respectable poet would suddenly have a common denominator with the leader of Nogu Svelo! and an informal in the reference sense by Max Pokrovsky. But in the end it turned out just like that, and Max wrote four songs to the verses of Mikhail Gutseriev, which came out as solo tracks and a video of the musician.
It can be assumed that working with artists who try to keep their nose to the wind is a very troublesome process. In tracks that claim to be trendy, lines are required not so much for meaning as for phonetic rhymes, and words often act as a kind of hook in the overall sound picture. The poet himself admits that sometimes one has to tinker, and the text is redone several times. But the result is worth it if we are talking about the song “Indivisible” performed by Dima Bilan or “Stone on the Heart”, which was recorded by Polina Gagarina.
Romance as a genre has always been on the sidelines of pop music, primarily because of the high demands for melody and lyrics by average pop standards. But Mikhail Gutseriev managed to find the right words here too. Together with the composer Andrey Misin, the song “The Time of Mad Passions Has Came Out” was written, which was performed by the diva of Russian romance Nina Shatskaya. The singer has her own approach, she always noted that she appreciates some theatricality in songs and is not afraid of old-fashionedness when it comes to words and music that are filled with a special meaning.
To comprehend the genre called “Alla Pugacheva” is hardly possible even for those who have worked with the singer for many years. The prima donna is still very difficult to attribute to any style, and it is even more difficult to understand what exactly Alla Borisovna wants to sing. Mikhail Gutseriev succeeded twice. With the songs “Don’t Call” to the music of Andrey Ktitarev and “Pulls the Heart of the Hand”, written with the already mentioned Maxim Pokrovsky. As a reciprocal gesture, the Primadonna personally presented Mikhail Safarbekovich with an award in the nomination “Best Songwriter” at the “Song of the Year” ceremony in 2016. “I am the happiest of all,” the winner then said from the stage of the Olimpiysky, quoting a line from the song by Grigory Leps, who also sang songs based on Gutseriev’s verses.
“A Russian song is impossible without a tear and a smile,” Mikhail Safarbekovich said in an interview with MK, and the poet, who wrote more than two hundred hits for a variety of stars, can probably be trusted. Even Gutseriev, with all his experience, most likely cannot calculate a hit one hundred percent, but by his 65th birthday, the poet and composer has become a real expert in sentimental songs for a wide variety of audiences. And at the birthday party of Mikhail Safarbekovich, a separate toast will surely be said for this.
