Piotrovsky named a way to fight eco-activists in museums

Director of the Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky answered a question about a wave of vandalism in Europe started by so-called eco-activists. Over the past six months, the most famous masterpieces have been attacked in the largest museums in Europe. Among the victims are paintings by Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Gustav Klimt.
Young people pour soup or mashed potatoes on canvases and stick themselves next to famous paintings, calling for saving the planet from destruction and abandoning the use of oil and gas in favor of more environmentally friendly fuels. However, so far such actions have only led to forced restoration of works that have become “hostages” of their “environmental policy”.
The Director of the Hermitage sees only one solution to the problem of “eco-activists” – to talk less about their actions.
“When they stop talking about them, then they will stop doing all this,” said Mikhail Borisovich. “While they were sticking themselves to the roads and talking about them, they kept doing it. As soon as they stopped talking about road promotions, they spread to museums. You need to be silent about them.
If such people come to museums, they need to be isolated and the hall closed.
Now there is an idea of a new museology: that the museum should be a public place where protests can be held. But this is a wrong position, in my opinion. We need to make sure that non-museum things that happen in museums do not attract attention, and then they will not exist.
The director of the Hermitage also added that he was sure that there was a clear calculation in the actions of “eco-activists”, their actions were planned and financed by someone who benefits from such a turbulent situation in museums.
