The Oscar for Best Animated Feature went to Pinocchio Guillermo del Toro. The animated film by the Mexican director of the same name is a rethinking of the famous fairy tale by Carlo Collodi about a wooden doll who wants to become a living boy.
The work on the cartoon became known back in 2008 and was originally planned for release in 2013 or 2014, but later the creators had problems with the script. In 2018, the rights to the film were bought by Netflix, and work on it resumed. He also won a British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) and a Golden Globe.
For Guillermo del Toro, this is his fourth Oscar nomination and second win – he received the award as best director for the fantasy drama The Shape of Water (2017), which was also recognized as the best film. This film brought him a Golden Globe and a prize at the Venice Film Festival. In addition, he received a nomination for Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), which was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. This film won the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA).
The title of the best cartoon this year was also fought by “Marseille, a shell in shoes”, “Sea monster”, “I’m blushing”, “Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish”.
