A painting by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, “Woman with a Clock,” was sold at Sotheby’s auction. Its cost was $139.4 million – this is the second result in the history of sales of the artist’s works at auction, Sotheby’s said in a statement on the X social network. In addition, the painting became the most expensive one sold at auction in 2023.
The canvas depicts Picasso’s beloved Marie-Therese Walter with a wristwatch. In 1966, the painting was bought from Pablo Picasso by the Beyeler Gallery in Basel. Two years later she moved to the Pace Gallery collection in New York. Also in 1968, the work was bought by collector Emily Fischer Landau. For more than 50 years, the painting hung above the fireplace in her apartment. The collector died in March 2023, and Sotheby’s auction house received the right to sell her collection. We are talking about 120 works worth about $400 million.
