After the news of a possible deal with Pfizer, GBT shares closed up 9.6% today. The market capitalization of the company amounted to $3.12 billion. The day before, GBT shares rose 41% on a Bloomberg report. Now they are trading at $65.8 apiece.
GBT is headquartered in South San Francisco. The company was founded in 2011. Its drug, Oxbrita, was approved for the treatment of sickle cell anemia, a type of inherited blood disorder characterized by abnormalities in the structure of the hemoglobin protein. According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, about 420 million people worldwide suffer from sickle cell anemia and similar diseases. It is noted that most often this disease occurs in people whose ancestors lived in Africa, India, Saudi Arabia and the Mediterranean countries.
