The issue of privatization is constantly on the agenda, many in the government support it, the key here is to prevent the squandering of state property for next to nothing. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov to journalists.

“Such ideas, indeed, they are constantly on the agenda. Further, it is a question of profitability; further, the main thing is not to squander state property for next to nothing. But the fact that it should eventually fall into private hands and become more profitable, more efficient, create new jobs is unequivocal,” he said.

Privatization, which is supported by many in the Cabinet’s economic bloc, “is always the end result” except in sectors where private business cannot physically ensure the consolidated development of the industry, Peskov added.

Chairman of the Central Bank Elvira Nabiullina statedthat it is necessary to move towards privatization, it is possible to do this “without prejudice to the strategic interests” of Russia. Presidential aide Maxim Oreshkin also spoke in support of privatization. He recalled the proposal of the head VTB Andrey Kostin, noting that he does not support “large-scale privatization”, but the option mentioned by Nabiullina – “withdrawal from assets inefficiently used by the state for the benefit of the state.”

In April, Kostin suggested restarting privatization in the country in connection with the destruction due to sanctions of the “supporting elements” of the Russian economy that have developed over the past 30 years. According to him, such a measure will help strengthen the foundations of market mechanisms, ensure the development of the stock market, as well as form a new generation of managers and create competition.
