Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ proposed returning museum values to the Solovetsky Monastery and cataloging them. Now the relics of the monastery are kept in the Solovetsky Museum-Reserve. The collection, in particular, includes icons, church decoration, documents, books, household items, handicrafts, and monastery building materials.
“It is important to organize work to compile a complete catalog of objects from the museum’s fund, including those related to the history of the Solovetsky monastery, and to consider the issue of transferring them to the Solovetsky Monastery,” said the head of the Russian Orthodox Church at a meeting of the board of trustees of the Foundation for the Preservation and Development of the Solovetsky Archipelago ( quote from “Interfax”).
The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church noted that on Solovki, the natural heritage is also subject to state protection, including the forest fund, flora and fauna. According to him, this can be done by establishing regimes and regulations for a religious and historical site, as well as by granting certain zones of the archipelago the status of a specially protected area. Patriarch Kirill asked the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources to join this work.
The Patriarch also stated the need to improve the standard of living of the indigenous population of Solovki. According to him, the poverty of the locals is especially noticeable against the background of the guests of the archipelago, many of whom are wealthy. This comparison does not benefit the Solovetsky Monastery, he noted.
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church expressed concern about the insufficiently intensive pace of restoration work on Solovki. He said that over the past four years, only two buildings out of 155 have been restored on the archipelago. He asked the Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova to monitor the pace of restoration.
Restoration work on Solovki is carried out within the framework of the “Development of Culture and Tourism” program and the Federal Target Program “Culture of Russia”. The state allocated about 6 billion rubles for them. In May 2023 the court found guilty in the theft of 20 million rubles allocated for the preparation of documentation for the restoration of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Solovetsky Monastery, four people, including the former head of the department of state protection of cultural heritage of the Ministry of Culture, Vladimir Tsvetnov.
