The decision to cancel the performance with the participation of actress Chulpan Khamatova, which was supposed to take place on February 28 at the Riga Theater, was made by the artistic director Alvis Hermanis. The Soviet and Latvian actor Gundars Abolins wrote about this on his page on the social network.
“To cancel the performance is the decision of our artistic director Alvis Hermanis,
with which yesterday after the penultimate rehearsal we agreed (some easier, some harder),” Abolins wrote.
He also noted that Khamatova prepared her role in Latvian, Ukrainian and Russian, therefore, according to him, blaming the actress for not being able to learn the text in Latvian is “at least stupid.”
In addition, Abolins added that director Uldis Tirons conducted a large cultural and historical research about Nikolai Gogol and his native Little Russia for the sake of the event. In this regard, the Latvian actor urged not to blame the director.
