The Pantone Color Institute has named Viva Magenta its color of the year 2023. This shade is inspired by the color of cochineal, an insect from which the substance is extracted to obtain a natural dye – carmine. Pantone believes that this shade expresses a “rebellious spirit”.
Pantone develops color palettes and standards and advises brands on color solutions. The Pantone Institute of Color, or the Pantone Color Institute, is part of Pantone. Researchers at the institute study how color affects all areas of our lives. Throughout the year, the institute’s employees observe which shades are used most often in the world. Thus, the institute assigns the color of the year to a shade that has already become popular.
“This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and inspiring. This is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encourages experimentation and self-expression without limits, an electrifying and boundless hue that manifests itself as a standout statement. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes one and all with the same passion for life and rebellious spirit,” reads the press release on the Pantone website.
Pantone Color of the Year 2022 defined a shade of lilac called Very Peri. Pantone said the color should “demonstrate an energetic, joyful mood and a dynamic presence that encourages bold creativity and imagery.”
