Palestinian poet Refaat Alarir, one of a younger generation of writers in Gaza who chose to write in English to tell their stories, was killed in an Israeli strike. Aran News writes about this with reference to a message from his friends.
Israel carried out new raids in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday evening, Hamas authorities said.
Alarir said days after Israel launched a ground offensive in October that it refused to leave northern Gaza, the epicenter of the fighting at the time.
“Refaat’s murder is tragic, painful and outrageous. This is a huge loss,” his friend Ahmed Alnaouk wrote on social network X.
Literary Hub also paid tribute to him, with writer and journalist Ramzi Baroud writing on social media: “Rest in peace Refaat Alarir. We will continue to be guided by your wisdom today and in eternity.”
Alarir was a professor of English literature at the Islamic University of Gaza, where he taught Shakespeare, among other subjects. He also co-founded the We Are Not Numbers project, which pairs writers from Gaza with international mentors who help them write stories in English about their experiences.
As part of the project, the book “Gaza Writes Back,” a chronicle of life in Gaza by young Palestinian authors, was edited, and the book “Gaza is Silent” was published.
