In Crimea, up to 90% of the oyster harvest could have died due to a severe storm. These assessments were shared with Kommersant FM by the Association of Manufacturing and Trading Enterprises of the Fish Market. Local farmers expect it will be possible to measure the damage within a week. A powerful storm with hurricane-force winds hit Crimea on November 26. Almost 800 thousand fry were carried away from one of the farms in Sevastopol to the sea. Due to the volumes of products not received by the market, Far Eastern oysters may become more expensive in the near future, admits Vitaly Kornev, president of the Association of Industrial and Trade Enterprises of the Fish Market:

“It’s difficult to survive a storm of this level. The oysters just wash away. But I don’t think the damage will be severe – 10-15%. While the Far Eastern oyster is wild, larger, and overgrown, the Crimean oyster is a fake oyster, made from imported spat, and is closer to traditional French samples. The volume increased year by year when the Crimean Bridge began operating. At some point, everything became very good, because previously there were problems with logistics.”

However, plantations located far out to sea also received serious damage, notes the founder of an oyster farm in Yalta, Sergei Kulik:

“It will take from 2 million rubles. up to 40 million rubles First we need to restore the pier. Do you know what concrete work is? I lost the pier, two retaining walls. They flew like matchboxes. The wave height was from 8 m to 10 m. My colleague in the western part of Sevastopol, who had a shield one and a half kilometers from the coast, said that his losses were almost 80%.”

The three plantations that were on the high seas suffered greatly, up to 80%. The storm is still ongoing, and it is not yet possible to go out to sea and assess the real losses. In his opinion, restoring the destroyed infrastructure may take two years and several tens of millions of rubles.

At the same time, Russian restaurants will feel a shortage of Crimean oysters and mussels in the coming weeks. About 80-90% of oysters in Russia are sold through catering establishments. The Federation of Restaurateurs and Hoteliers said that it is too early to draw conclusions about supply disruptions. In addition, Black Sea oysters occupy a relatively small segment, says Moscow restaurant market ombudsman Sergei Mironov:

“There are much more foreign oysters on the market now. If we are talking about Russian, then it is mainly Far Eastern. Oysters from friendly countries are much more expensive. The cheapest is the Far Eastern wild oyster.

Then comes the Far Eastern farmed oyster, then the Black Sea, African. But, unfortunately, the Black Sea oyster causes a lot of poisoning. This usually happens with wild ones, which is why restaurants are willing to overpay for farmed oysters. But Black Sea mollusks are grown, unfortunately, very close to human habitation, this is always fraught.”

In September, experts predicted a shortage of Far Eastern oysters due to rainfall in the Primorsky Territory. Then, in one of the farms, the new crop died almost completely; overall, the colony was reduced by 70%. However, the situation for the market was resolved successfully, continues Sergei Mironov:

“Only recently we said that there was a mudflow in the Far East, and there will never be more Far Eastern oysters. The mud fell down, and it turned out that all the oysters were alive. And Far Eastern mollusks are now available in every Moscow restaurant.”

According to Rosrybolovstvo, over the past two years, the production of oysters and mussels in Russia has increased by almost 60%. The growth was mainly driven by Primorsky Krai. Until 2014, such products were mainly imported from Europe.
