On Sundays on the TV channel “Russia-Culture” new episodes of the documentary cycle “Elements”. The first film – “The Post-War Metro in Leningrad” – September 4 at 13.20.

How are works of art born? What are they made of? The documentary cycle “Elements” reveals these secrets. Through individual, sometimes unremarkable details, the audience learns the fascinating stories of the creation of great creations, with the help of the presenters – well-known art critics and culturologists – they try to unravel the hidden meaning encrypted in the works of the masters.

There will be 8 episodes in the new TV season. The first four tapes – “Elements with Alexander Borovsky” – will tell about the masterpieces that the inhabitants of St. Petersburg see almost daily, are used to them and therefore rarely pay attention to them. Alexander Borovsky, head of the Department of Contemporary Art at the State Russian Museum, suggests changing the scale of perception and peering into the details of monumental works.

The painting “Post-War Metro of Leningrad” will introduce the viewer to the first branch of the Leningrad Metro, which is a vivid example of the Stalinist Empire style. Together with the presenter, we will visit the stations “Avtovo” and “Vladimirskaya”, explore the elements of their design and take a trip into the past. The second film – “Metro of the “Thaw” period and modern style” – will tell about the design of the Leningrad metro stations “Mayakovskaya”, “Gostiny Dvor” and “Elektrosila” and will help to feel the special atmosphere of the “Thaw” era. In the tape “Stagnation Metro” Alexander Borovsky talks about the secrets of the mosaic panel at the station “Alexander Nevsky-2 Square”. And after watching the picture “Metro Today”, viewers will be able to study in detail the stained-glass windows of the Volkovskaya station, etc.

The next four films – “Elements” with Ilya Doronchenkov – are dedicated to the legendary works of fine art. Ilya Doronchenkov, Deputy Director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts for Research, will tell unknown stories about famous paintings from the collection of the Pushkin Museum. Among them: “Breakfast on the Grass” by Claude Monet, “Pink Workshop” by Henri Matisse, “Artaxerxes, Haman and Esther” by Rembrandt and “The First Furrow” by Jean Baptiste Greuze. The viewer will learn why Rembrandt placed an apple closer to Haman on a golden platter, and a bunch of grapes in front of Artaxerxes and Esther; why did Claude Monet paint his “Breakfast on the Grass” on a 4 x 6 meter canvas, initially performing a smaller version of the composition; why Jean-Baptiste Greuze can be called the founder of the soap opera genre and how Henri Matisse’s painting “The Artist’s Studio” became the first “symphonic interior”.
