Sergey Timofeev, OID, Stereovoid “Things & Fingers”
Sergey Timofeev is a Russian-speaking poet from Riga, a member of the Orbita association and the author of Russian lyrics for Brainstorm. Andrey Antonets (OID) is a Russian electronic musician who releases his tracks on various European labels. Stereovoid is a Frenchman Stéphane Argille, who invented the Objetrouve label, whose releases are both musical media and art objects. Work on the album “Things And Fingers” began two years ago. Five of Sergey Timofeev’s poems are set to noise layers and ambient OID, five – to Stereovoid synth-wave. As always in Timofeev’s poems, the texts selected for “Things And Fingers” have no rhyme, but there are many everyday details, the material world and timeless intuitive sketches that capture moments of everyday life. But there are also poetic insights that are absolutely appropriate in 2022 (albeit earlier) like the poem “I saw the birth of the old world”: other dominants of decline.

Arctic Monkeys “The Car”
The degree of controversy around the new Arctic Monkeys album in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet suggests that this group has become definitively popular in our music lovers environment. Or is her status imitated by commentators, in whose youth her first albums fell. Of course, then, in the mid-2000s, she was “real”, but, for example, the previous Arctic Monkeys album “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino” (2018) was the maximum experiment by the standards of the group. “The Car” for fans of the “rock” period of the Arctic Monkeys is an album from the “knocked from below” series. This is not just a pop sound in the spirit of classic Scott Walker recordings, this is a careful adherence to the spirit and letter of baroque pop and soul of the 1970s, detailing on the verge of pathology, when the violins in the song’s code fade out exactly where they fell silent in Barry White. If a faithful fan of the band cannot decide on his attitude to the next innovation, he just has to ask himself the question: would I advise you to start getting to know the band from this album to a person who has never heard it at all? The author of these lines would definitely advise.

M.I.A. “Mata”
The story of the English artist Matanga Arulpragasam, known to the world as MIA, is the story of pop culture’s search for a place for political activism. The daughter of Tamil radical Arul Pragasam, often described as a terrorist, fled Sri Lanka to London, where she fell in love with hip-hop and wrote songs that earned her Oscar and Grammy nominations, as well as awards from NME and Q magazines. At the beginning of the century , before Pussy Riot appeared on the horizon, it was difficult to imagine a pop musician more involved in politics. In 2016, preparing for the release of “AIM”, MIA promised that this would be her last album. “Mata” does not sound like an afterword, on the contrary, as in the case of “The Car”, it is quite possible to start getting acquainted with the artist’s discography from this very place – you won’t go wrong. The perfect combination of raggamuffin, bhangra and other world music (now it should be called global) with trap and hyperpop makes this album accessible to the widest audience. And the song “The One” has a soulful resemblance to the best song in the MIA catalog – “Paper Planes”.

DDT “Creativity in the void – 2”
“Russian crap will win the war. And the war too. And there is so much talk about the war around, ”Yuri Shevchuk said last year at a joint concert with the Kino group after performing the song Crap. It was not included in the then released disc “Creativity in the Void”, the author saved it for the second part of the album. “No one needs it, glory is behind” – it was the sad irony of a rock veteran, but now Shevchuk is both banned and the most relevant rock musician in the country. When releasing the first part of “Creativity”, he stated that out of more than 30 recorded tracks, he removed all romance and pronounced hits, leaving only “acute social lyrics.” However, the new release contains both “A Little Death”, written in early January and full of apocalyptic forebodings, and the recently screened poignant trip-hop theme “It’s Lonely in Paradise”. But there is also a long-written, certainly romantic “Ufa” – a dedication to the homeland of the disgraced poet. On the whole, a full-fledged DDT album, in which there is neither a lack of melodies, nor a lack of iron riffs, nor a shortage of accurate and funny lines.

Simple Minds Direction Of The Heart
Against the backdrop of last year’s stunning comeback album Duran Duran, the even more sensational orchestral album a-ha and the news of the upcoming Depeche Mode album, the new CD Simple Minds is just another testament to the power of the titans of the 1980s and 1990s. In fact, only U2 is silent, but something tells you that it will not rust behind them. U2 can’t just go ahead and release an album, they need to come up with something historical. But Simple Minds can, and they don’t take long pauses between albums. “Direction Of The Heart” is, first of all, a stadium sound that literally grabs you into its arms, and there is no way to escape from them. The Springsteen charisma of frontman Jim Kerr is in place, at least listen to the song “Human Traffic” – you will only find such confidence that music can unite only at Manic Street Preachers. Russell Mael from The Sparks is a guest on the same song, a man who does not trade for random collaborations. In the song “Planet Zero”, according to Kerr, Prince meets Hawkwind. However, in reality, this is still the same soft power of Simple Minds, against which there has been no reception for 45 years now.

LRK Trio “Prayer”
The music of the Moscow LRK Trio (Evgeny Lebedev, piano; Ignat Kravtsov, drums; Anton Revnyuk, bass) has always been characterized by a little more freedom than their colleagues in the Russian jazz scene. This is not only about freedom of improvisation, but also about unexpected arrangement turns. In the opening track “Groundhog Day”, gospel choir-like claps appear almost immediately, over the main piano theme. If there is a good idea, why hide such beauty? In the Apollo-Soyuz composition, the cosmic texture is outlined only by thin, barely distinguishable lines; this is a story not so much about conquering the stars, but about inner space, about loneliness. And now more new questions: what do we do in space if we are not able to deal with our Earth? LRK Trio observe in their tracks the plot that the listener feels without words, and at the same time do not forget that jazzophiles need to be imbued with the skill of each musician, which means that everyone should be allowed to play solo to their heart’s content.

Tom Odell “Best Day Of My Life”
In the early 2010s, Englishman Tom Odell was lucky enough to compose “Another Love”, a piano ballad for the ages that has been covered hundreds of times at talent shows and used in TikTok videos. He has not lost the ability to write at the limit of his mental strength even now, when he frankly speaks in an interview about the struggle with mental disorders, to which he devoted his last years. Tom Odell’s fifth album, Best Day Of My Life, has a song that rivals Another Love in terms of the fragility of love. It is called “Sad Anymore”, it does not have a powerful dramatic twist, as in “Another Love”, and everything rests on the singer’s pure, quivering emotion. Odell started as a wunderkind songwriter, now in his 30s, but the spontaneity of youth in the songs is preserved and hardly anyone else can convey the fear of the approaching end of the weekend as authentically as he does in the song “Monday”. Weekends go away – so the whole life will pass! The British “silver melancholy” (in the words of Yuri Shevchuk) is a well-circulated brand, but only Tom Odell knows how to mourn so beautifully to the piano alone.

Resin “Dust”
“Resin” is a musical project of actor Artur Smolyaninov. He began work on his debut album “Dust” back in 2019, before the pandemic, and even more so before the interview with Katerina Gordeeva (included by the Ministry of Justice in the list of foreign agents), after which a protocol was drawn up against him “for discrediting the army.” Like everything that appears in the musical field, Smolyaninov’s album is now listened to “in a different way.” And at the same time, there is no song on the album that could not be imagined sounding at another time. The influence of Russian rock on the songs of Resin is impossible not to notice. It is easy to imagine how some rocker-patriot puts poems about the heroism of the liberators to the music from the song “Man”. But Smolyaninov does not have such a lyrical hero. He has a man “don’t understand where he was going, he was almost fine, he imagined himself either as a child, or as a wounded heron.” The album “Dust” has not only obvious guitar riffs, but also quiet instrumental periods with melodic declamation, and verses under the slow picking of an electric guitar, reminiscent of the singers of the gloomy American South. This is the author’s song of a person who has been looking for words for a long time and finally found them, and at the same time found the right music.

Ekaterina Yashnikova “Plantain”
“The black man has already come into our century,” sings Ekaterina Yashnikova in her new album “Plantain”, whose past works, even the most irreconcilable in relation to reality, were imbued with healthy and bright energy. In the new songs, punk anguish and anti-utopian pathos were added to the pioneering enthusiasm. “Plantain” is one of the first works by Russian musicians, made entirely under the impression of the events of the last two years. The album also did not do without the traditions of Siberian non-conformism. The singer took the liberty of recording her own version of Yanka Diaghileva’s song “From a Big Mind”, and also performed the role of the Russian Dolores O’Riordan in the songs “Tu-tu-tu” and “Plantain”. Ekaterina Yashnikova attracted serious men to the recording of two melodeclamatory numbers, who are usually attributed to opposite ideological camps: the bard Branimir (“Prophet”) and the soloist of “Kurara” Oleg Yagodin (“2020”). “Plantain” is a short album, but a short runtime was enough to indicate the transformation of Yashnikova as an author, her current tastes and views. It came out exhaustively.

Björk “Fossora”
In the last decade, everyone has become accustomed to the fact that new masks, outfits and art concepts in the work of the Icelandic singer Björk are more important than her own music. The audience is ready for the new album to contain a set of atonal harmonies with barely traceable melodic ideas, and only the singer herself has the key to the cipher. He wants – he will give, he does not want – figure it out for yourself. She herself is not at odds with these concepts. When the song “Atopos” was born, Björk decided that it would be a “clarinet album”, because this song features six clarinets and an oboe. But only four tracks out of 13 correspond to this concept, and in the song “Allow” flutes sound, as many as 12 pieces. Creating the worlds of Fossora, programming the strings at a table in a nearby cafe, she thought about how to convey the greatness of her native Iceland through music, and at the same time studied such a difficult matter as mushrooms. Mushrooms combined the themes of “death, survival and ecological meditation” for her. In general, not everything is clear, but terribly interesting, like the music itself on the album.
