The astronomical observatories of the Kazan Federal University (KFU) are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, said Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova.
“Kazan observatories made a huge contribution to the development of optical astronomy, astrophysics, geodesy thanks to the developed scientific team of astronomers working at Kazan University,” the federal official wrote in her Telegram channel.
According to her, the decision to include the Kazan observatories on the UNESCO World Heritage List was made within the framework of the 45th session of the organization, which is currently taking place in Kazan. In December 2020, Kazan observatories were included in the preliminary list of candidates for inclusion in the list.
The complex of astronomical observatories of KFU includes the city observatory and the country observatory named after V.P. Engelhardt. As Ramil Khairutdinov, director of the Institute of International Relations of KFU, previously reported, the observatory complex is undoubtedly one of the unique objects of world significance – all the signs of authenticity and uniformity can be found in it. It is important that these are operating observatories – scientific research is still being carried out using astronomical equipment, and university students are also studying.
