NOVATEK confirms plans to build Murmansk LNG plant – Kommersant

NOVATEK is studying the possibility of building a gas liquefaction plant in the Murmansk region of three lines of 6.8 million tons each, confirmed the head of the company Leonid Mikhelson. Kommersant’s sources previously reported on NOVATEK’s plans. The first line of the plant can start operating in 2027, the second – in 2029.
Mr. Mikhelson said that Murmansk LNG can use electricity from the surplus Kola NPP, and gas from the plant can be transported by tankers without ice class. “This solves two problems at once. The region has a significant generation surplus of about 1 GW, mainly at the Kola NPP. We can use these capacities for our project. And most importantly, the non-freezing water area will make it possible to ensure the export of products by tankers without an ice class, ”he specified (quoted by TASS).
According to Kommersant, the project has already been discussed at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak. The amount of investment is unknown. Gas for the plant NOVATEK plans to receive from the Unified Gas Supply System, for which it is necessary to build the Volkhov-Murmansk-Belokamenka gas pipeline with a length of 1.3 thousand km. Perhaps NOVATEK and Gazprom will interact through an agency agreement, as in the Cryogas-Vysotsk project in the Baltic.
