The governments of Russia and Abkhazia plan to soon sign an agreement on the reconstruction of the airport in the capital of the country, Sukhum. The parties, as noted, discussed the construction and restoration of objects of the Abkhazian resort and tourist infrastructure with the participation of Russian investors.
“According to Alexander Novak, in the near future it is planned to sign an intergovernmental agreement with the republic on the restoration of the Sukhum International Airport. V. G. Ardzinba,” the message says.
Novak also called Abkhazia a strategic partner, declaring a 73% increase in trade turnover in the last year.
As Vedomosti wrote earlier, the authorities of Abkhazia plan to announce a competition in the coming months to select an investor for the reconstruction of Sukhum airport. Interest in participating in the project was shown by “Airports of the Regions” (90% – from the former top manager of “Renova” Vladimir Rezer) and the structures of Oleg Deripaska, who previously owned the Aerodinamika airport holding. Also, the interlocutors of Vedomosti do not exclude the participation of Roman Trotsenko in the Novaport competition if there are attractive conditions.
The only airport in Abkhazia with international status has not been operating since the Georgian-Abkhaz war of 1992-1993. In 2021, Russian military sappers carried out its inspection and demining. The airport has one of the longest runways (runways) in the territory of the former USSR, in the 1980s. it was lengthened to 3.64 km to receive the Buran reusable spacecraft.
