Nokia announcedwhich has signed a multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement with China’s Vivo, which covers both parties’ patents on cellular technologies, including 5G.
Nokia and Vivo had a cross-licensing agreement until 2021, but the parties could not extend it then, without agreeing on the terms of a new agreement. This has led to numerous lawsuits between companies in different countries regarding the Chinese smartphone maker’s use of 5G technology.
Under the new agreement, Vivo will pay royalties to Nokia and will also make compensation payments during the litigation period. At the same time, the agreement resolves all pending patent disputes between the parties in all jurisdictions. The parties did not disclose the details of the agreement.
For Nokia, this is already the sixth licensing agreement with major smartphone manufacturers over the past 13 months, noted Jenny Lukander, president of Nokia Technologies, the intellectual property licensing division. Previously, similar agreements were signed with Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Honor and Oppo.
